What the shingle sits on

Most of a roof goes on before the shingles do.

Granules wash into the gutters and pile at the bottom of the downspout, and on most houses here the south-facing slopes let go first. That's the one layer you can see.

So the shingle is what estimates get compared on. The numbering follows install order, and that order is itself a spec item: drip edge slips beneath the underlayment along the bottom edge, then sits on top of it at the rakes, the sloped edges running up the gable ends. The roof deck

Synthetic underlayment

Starter course and drip edge

The adhesive first row that bonds the bottom shingles down where wind wants to lift them, plus the bent metal along every edge. Architectural shingles are commonly rated to somewhere around 110 to 130 mph, and that number assumes the starter is there and the nails went in right. Skipped starter and drip edge run backwards are two of the commonest shortcuts on a roof.

Ridge, hips and exhaust

Cap shingles are made to fold over the peak and the hip lines so the roof closes off, and the vent hidden beneath them carries the attic's hot air out. Whatever leaves up there has to come in low at the soffit, or the deck cooks from below.

Q1Why synthetic underlayment instead of felt?
Felt is paper soaked in asphalt, so it wrinkles once it's wet and tears when wind catches an open deck. Synthetic is a woven plastic sheet: it lies flat, turns more water, and it's still there the next morning if the tear-off runs late. It costs more per roll, and on a deck that sits open through an afternoon storm that's the part you notice.
Q2Does the ice-and-water membrane do anything in Broken Arrow?
Yes, and mostly not for ice. It's the one layer that seals itself around the nails driven through it, so it goes where water backs up and sits: the valleys, the low edge of the roof, and around every pipe and chimney. Wind-driven rain puts water there far more often than an ice dam does here. How far up the roof it has to reach is set by the code the city enforces, and your roofer pulls the tear-off permit at City Hall on South First Street, where a final inspection closes the job out.
Q3What is the ridge vent for?
It's the exhaust half of the attic: warm, damp air leaves at the peak while cooler air comes in low through the soffit vents, and the two sides have to balance or the deck bakes from underneath. The model-code baseline is one square foot of vent opening for every 150 square feet of attic floor, split evenly between the two, so a 1,500 square foot attic floor works out to 10 square feet of opening, 5 at the ridge and 5 down at the soffits. Your own number depends on the attic and on what the city enforces. There's a longer look at attic ventilation and roof life, and ventilation work belongs in the same job as a tear-off.
Q4Can metal go straight over the asphalt that's up there now?
It gets done, and it isn't what our roofers put on a house here. Panels hang on clips fastened into the deck, so leaving the old shingles in place means nobody has looked at the wood those clips are going into. Taking the old roof off also lets the membrane and the underlayment go down new, which is most of what keeps water out of the house. A detached garage where the deck came off recently is the one place it's a fair question.
